Oregon Sea Grant is pleased to announce the availability of two Undergraduate Marine Research Fellowships for 2009. These fellowships are intended to support undergraduate student research projects in the areas of marine and coastal science, resource management, policy, history, economics, or education.

Who May Apply
Any undergraduate student currently enrolled in a college or university in Oregon may apply. These fellowships are intended to support students in conducting their own original research in close collaboration with a faculty member from their institution. Applicants are encouraged to seek guidance from their intended supervising professor in developing their research proposal. Women and underrepresented minorities are encouraged to apply. There is no interview for this fellowship.
Fellowship Award
Each Oregon Sea Grant Undergraduate Research Fellowship will provide resident* tuition for winter and spring terms, a stipend of $1500 per term for winter and spring terms 2009 and $2500 for summer term 2009, and up to $100 for travel and supply costs per term. Total awards are not to exceed $9000 each including tuition. Fellows will be expected to work 10 hours per week on their research projects during winter and spring terms and 20 hours per week during the summer. The faculty members supervising the research will be responsible for overseeing each of the students’ progress during their fellowship. Fellows will be expected to provide periodic progress updates and a final report to Oregon Sea Grant at the culmination of their fellowship. Fellows may also be asked to give a brief presentation at an Oregon Sea Grant function.
*If any of the fellowship awardees are not Oregon residents, Sea Grant will pay the equivalent of up to 16 credit hours of resident tuition or approximately $1536 per term and the student will be responsible for the remainder of their tuition.
How To Apply
Please submit the materials listed below to Oregon Sea Grant by the November 14, 2008 deadline.
- Original, official undergraduate transcripts (no copies, please).
- A current resume.
- A 2-3 page research proposal outlining your research plan for the fellowship period.
Your proposal should contain these elements, in order: background and rationale; project summary; methodology and work plan for the duration of the fellowship; demonstrate how your research project will incorporate an outreach, extension, education, or communication element; expected outcomes of your research; a brief description of how your research will impact society or influence the field of research; a budget for up to $300 in travel and supply costs for field work; letter from your supervising professor indicating that they support your application and are willing to oversee your research; and contact information for two references (other than supervising professor)
